The Tanakh, also known as the Hebrew Bible, is the canonical collection of Jewish texts. The term Tanakh, an acronym derived from the first Hebrew letter of the Masoretic Text's three traditional subdivisions - Torah ("Teaching" or the Five Books of Moses), Nevi'im ("Prophets"), and Ketuvim ("Writings") - reflects the core structure of these scriptures.

Comprising twenty-four books, the Tanakh treats Samuel, Kings, Chronicles, and Ezra-Nehemiah as individual works, while combining the Twelve Prophets into a single book known as Trei Asar (the "Twelve").

Torah

The Torah, meaning "teaching," consists of five books known as the "Five Books of Moses." Commonly referred to as Chamisha Chumshei Torah ("five fifth-sections of the Torah") in printed versions, these texts are informally called a Chumash.

The five books of the Torah are identified in Hebrew by their opening significant words:

• Bereshit (Genesis) - "In the beginning"
• Shemot (Exodus) - "Names"
• Vayikra (Leviticus) - "And He called"
• Bəmidbar (Numbers) - "In the desert [of]"
• Devarim (Deuteronomy) - "Things" or "Words"
